Think&Drink - The Good Place: Creating Communities

Think&Drink is a Humanities happy hour series that combines good conversation and great beer. Join our content experts for a dynamic dialogue set in a great local bar.

What makes your community a good place to live? What can those who live there do to improve its quality of life? How can your community be one that people want to move to? We will talk about the Buen Vivir! (Spanish for “good living”) of communities – those assets in which residents can invest that will help the community spiral up. What if those investments empowered all the people, protected the environment, and created a vibrant economy?

What a radical thought! Be ready for a lively discussion on how together we can create great places to live.

Discussion led by Dr. Gary Goreham

All tickets include one drink and snacks. All participants must be 21+

Doors open at 1:30 PM and program begins at 2 PM.

March FM Sustainability Network Gathering

Join us for the upcoming FM Sustainability Network Gathering and meet passion people through casual networking! This event is open to the public and all are welcomed and encouraged. The purpose of The Network is to create a platform for individuals interested and/or involved in local sustainability initiatives. There is no better place to discover how FM takes action to become a more sustainable community. To top it all off, our hosts, Front Street Taproom, offer 30 local craft beers on tap! :D

This month our speaker will be Mike Bush, Engagement Coordinator for Audubon Dakota. Mike will be speaking on behalf of Audubon's Urban Woods and Prairies Initiative. This is a project where unused riparian land (often flood buyout properties, but not always) in the Fargo-Moorhead area is being restored to native forest or prairie habitat. Approximately 800 acres have been enrolled across 24 sites throughout Fargo-Moorhead and UWP has recently been expanded to Grand Forks, Minot, and Bismarck. Besides providing habitat for birds and wildlife, the UWP sites provide easy access to green spaces for residents in urban areas.

Hope to see you there!

Think&Drink - Disconnect: What Do We Do About Domestic Violence?

Think&Drink is a Humanities happy hour series that combines good conversation and great beer. Join our content experts for a dynamic dialogue set in a great local bar.

Americans have long grappled with the multifaceted problem of domestic violence and its potential solutions. In the past decade, the role of the legal system has increasingly become a source debate.

Advocates for decriminalizing domestic violence have called for a greater emphasis on medical, social, and economic approaches and consequently less reliance on criminal law. Opponents contend such a move would destigmatize abuse and further reduce resources for survivors.

By placing the discussion within the larger historical context, we will explore how the legal system became the primary solution and the visions and struggles in the reform movement today.

Discussion led by Dr. Ashley Baggett

Think&Drink - Stranded: Engineering Our DNA

Think&Drink is a Humanities happy hour series that combines good conversation and great beer. Join our content experts for a dynamic dialogue set in a great local bar.

Suggestions that our Homo sapiens germ line can benefit from a bit of genetic engineering immediately raises specters of eugenic programs gone horribly awry. It might be the case, however, that some genetic engineering on humans is morally permissible, and in a few instances, obligatory, especially for parents and societies who must pursue future generations’ best interests. Based on normally uncontentious premises – no harm, enabling thriving, and promoting social utility - there a strong argument can be made to support a duty to genetically engineer future generations' lives and deaths.
Discussion led by Dennis Cooley

Spring Downtown After Hours: "Opening Avenues"

The Do It All Downtown group cordially invites you to our next Downtown After Hours to be held Monday, April 30th from 5-7pm at the Cellar at Front Street Taproom (lower level). Pizza from Rhombus Guys will be provided.

For those of you not familiar with the Do It All Downtown group, our mission is to bring Downtown business owners, employees, residents, and general Downtown enthusiasts together over common issues and camaraderie. We are a group of Downtown advocates that are excited to share our Downtown community with all of Fargo-Moorhead. Do It All Downtown is our collaborative grassroots effort to promote the positive image and vibrancy of Downtown.

This month’s Downtown After Hours theme is, “Opening Avenues." The idea behind “Opening Avenues” is to create dialog about all the exciting projects, developments, and changes happening in Downtown Fargo. One of our goals is to always actively keep both Downtowners and the community at large informed about what’s happening in the heart of our city. Now, more than ever, this is crucial. We are excited for the future of Downtown and its continued vibrant evolution.

This will be a great opportunity to connect with those active in and passionate about our Downtown in an informal setting. There will not be a formal panel for questions and answers, but we encourage you to interact with all present that evening. If you wish to make a brief statement regarding Downtown and your vision for it, or interest in it, we encourage you to do so!

We hope to see you on the 30th! If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to any of us.

Cheers!
Josie, Adrienne, Laura, Erica, Mark, Rick, and Jack

BHA Pint Night

Join BHA members and bring other outdoor enthusiasts together on the mezzanine of Front Street to share stories and discuss conservation issues. Find out how you can help protect our public lands by visitingbackcountryhunters.org

About Back Country Hunters:

Looking back, looking forward: A brief history of BHA
The campfire flared and popped, the undulating light casting crisp shadows across the seven faces gathered around it. The faces were somber yet resolute. There had been a lot of talk about loss, habitat destruction on favorite mountains, pollution of beloved waters. But a high note was rising through it all.

On that March evening of 2004 in the southern Cascade foothills outside Eagle Point, Oregon, seven visionaries saw a lot of problems with the management of our nation’s wild places and public lands. But they also conceived a means to address these problems. Onto this auspicious stage, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers was born.

Mike Beagle, on whose property they were gathered, Dick Hentze, Tim Lillebo, James Montieth, Tony Heckard, Michelle Halle and Brian Maguire set out to create a grassroots organization focused not on protecting one specific species, river or hunting area but on ecosystem-wide conservation across the continent. They wanted to create a voice for the silent wilderness.

Thirteen years later, more than ten thousand faces are gathered around that campfire, around that idea. That wilderness voice can be heard from the lonely tundra of Alaska to the raucous chambers of Congress in Washington, D.C. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is now, more than ever, advancing positive change for our nation’s hunting and fishing heritage.
